ABOUT
Samuel Yang is an artist committed to exploring multi-disciplinary and cross-media artistic expression. Studying in Design | Media Arts at UCLA, Samuel’s work covers an extensive range of mediums, including but not limited to sound design, music composition, video & animation design, motion design, UI/UX design, graphic design, 3D modeling, and product design.
Special Focus on Music & Sound: In 8th grade, Samuel was self-taught to produce electronic dance music. As he was getting more and more critical of music & sound, he wanted to stay away from commercial EDM music and started to explore the endless possibilities of sound. Over the years, with multiple musical aliases, Samuel Yang released music ranging from melodic-oriented genres, such as progressive house, electronica, and synthwave, to more experimental genres including techno, IDM, breaks, and ambient. As he continued to produce music in more genres, he also got familiar with the interactions between sounds and visuals.
Audio-Visual Interactions: As an artist who practices both visuals and sounds, Samuel has a strong pursuit of the perfect fit between visuals and sound. Oftentimes, the existing sound resources are far from meeting his requirements, thus he usually crafts his own sounds from scratch for every single one of his projects that involves sound. With continuous learning and practicing, Samuel can easily imagine sounds through visuals, or visualize sounds.
Humanity and Technology: Samuel’s personal work has prominent characteristics, that can often be described as “futuristic” and “cautionary”. Indeed, he strongly believes that design will not only be about making things and solving problems in the current world but also about designing humans themselves in a technological future. “Everyone should realize that the future is diverse and open, with countless possible interpretations, and as a human being, my role is to help design a positive future that celebrates diversity, equality, and social justice” - Samuel Yang
